June 27- Dutch Lowy Performance Seminar

Tasha, Wyatt and I headed down to San Diego on Friday night. Tasha and Wyatt hit up the San Diego zoo on Saturday. Wyatt's favorite animals were the Mir Cats, the otters, sea turtles, and the Jaguar.

As for me I showed up at Crossfit Invictus at 9:00am. The seminar was awesome. Dutch was very personable and you could tell he cared. Some time in the next week or two (once we get this move figure out) I will put all I learned to paper. The long and the short of it is this: lift heavy and often and then follow it up with a metcon that 80% of the time is between 2 and five minutes. Scale as needed to hit the same time domains that the elite athletes would hit. There was a billion more tidbits but it will have to wait for now.

One of the most important things I learned I will put into effect this week. Have fun and listen to your body. This is weeks plan...is no plan. We will be moving and will have alot of late nights. I will post my wods as I do them and otherwise will just be making them up as I go. The having fun concept has made my brain run alot lately and I will posting alot more on this coming up later in the week. Stay tuned for more.

Shane...no matter what you think, nice job this week. I just watched the US track and field championships and watched guys who train for 4 years come up short and have a bad day. Anytime you are talking about pure human performance, not every day will be your best. You are a beast, this is a journey not a destination and we have so much left to do.

June 27 - CrossFit Houston Summer Challenge

I suck and quite frankly I am a litte embarrassed. Not so much because my performance was so terrible, but because I am capable of so much better. Had a really off day and just felt zapped as soon as I started the WODs, no energy, no gas tank. For starters, here are the WODs from the competition:

WOD #1 (12 minute cut-off):
21/15/9
Row for calories
225# deadlifts
Lateral Burpees

WOD #2 (15 minute cut-off):
5 rounds for time:
20# wall ball shots, 30 reps
95# sumo deadlift high pulls, 7 reps

I barely completed each WOD within the allowed time. After much thought and conversation with family and friends I have decided that I overtrained badly since the qualifiers. But not in the traditional sense. I think I started taking my traning a little too seriously and I lost sight of why I started all of this in the first place...it is fun. Training hasn't felt fun for weeks and when you add that to the fact that I was doing two-a-days 5 days a week trying to turn into a badass over night...it caught up with me this week and I had some of my worst performances since I first started CrossFitting. I can make all the excuses in the world, but at the end of the day I did it to myself through poor training methods and additudes. I am going to take some time off, reevaluate my training plan, get some rest, get my head on straight and be back better than ever. I am actually glad this happened because I feel I have learned a valuable lesson that will pay off as I move forward in preparing for next years qualifiers.

I'll be back...

June 24 thru 26 - Shane's WOD/Rest

I am way more sore and beat down today than I feel I should be. So...I am going to take these three days before the CrossFit Houston Summer Challenge to do some skills work and a couple of short intense body weight sessions. Other than that just some light jogging, walking and stretching to try to stay loose and get rested up for the competition Saturday. I'll make a post on Friday evening when I get back from check in at CrossFit Houston. I should know my heat times and the WODs by then.

June 23 - Shane's WOD

3 rounds for time:
225# deadlifts, 10 reps
50 double unders

Borrowed this WOD from Crossfit Champions from last week. We'll see how my time stacks up with some of their posted times.

Also, the standard men's weight for WOD #1 at the challenge this weekend is 225#. So I'm guessing that is going to be deadlifts as I can't think of another lift that can reasonably done at that weight in a metcon. I could be wrong but I figured it would be a good idea to put my hands on 225# and move it around a bit either way.

*********
So a little of my thoughts here.
This weeks work capacity day was one long beat down so for the upcoming week I am going to break it into two shorter ones. Another goal is that every week I am going to hit the Curtis P's, or Rob Shauls' or weighted lunges becasue the lunge is a huge weakness of mine. This week I will go for a flat land ruck at high speed instead of the steep climb I just did.

Shane June 19-20

19th - WOD for the day: water skiing with the family. Rental boat...rental skis = not that great of a situation. Still had a great time though and got some decent exercise getting drug behind the boat while the ski refused to surface but I fought the good fight and got up once but was smoked by the time I finally got up. Fortunately, I had borrowed my buddy Patrick's wakeboard and when I finally decided to get on it (I used to hate wakeboarding) I had a blast. Definitely inhaled too much lake water though. All in all, a fun day with a little moderate exercise built in.

20th - Pouring concrete at my parent's place. Should be about 50ish of 80lbs bags. So, getting some more valuable cross-training lifting, carrying, pouring, mixing, wheelbarrowing & dumping concrete...in 100+ degree temps. Gotta love it.

Sunday the 21st will probably be a rest day...we'll see what I got left in the tank by then.
